After a long wait,PVR Cinemas are finally in Chennai, the culture capital of India. It is a grand entry for the entertainment behemoth with 10 screens to woo the Chennai audience. For starters,PVR Cinemas are India's biggest cinema chain.Being a loyalist to Sathyam Cinemas,I was waiting to see the plans of PVR Cinema for Chennaites. I went for a film day before yesterday having booked a comfortable seat at PVR.Being housed in a mall which is still in its finishing stage,it was difficult to locate the cinema halls. I thought PVR could have made some arrangement to guide the audience. There were several layers of tight security at the entrance. That was very much required considering today's insecure world.
After the security drill, I entered the movie hall. It was Audi 3.The first look of the hall was very impressive. It is probably the single biggest screen in the city. There was plenty of space left to move around easily. It was a welcome change, because many so called big theaters in Chennai like Abirami Mega Mall, Mayajaal and Inox are housed in cramped spaces. There were big reclining seats with enough leg room. The screen was quite big to complement the large movie hall. I salute the good intention of the theatre management to provide good movie experience for the audience.
Now, the comparison between Sathyam and PVR :
Audi 3 of PVR is probably a little bigger than the main hall in Sathyam. Other screens in Sathyam are big enough to give a theater experience- unlike Inox and Mayajaal. Inox is just a home theater.
The image quality in PVR cinemas is good, however it is way behind Sathyam's RDX. Sathyam stands out from its competitor with its state of the art screening technology.
The sound is good too, however I would rate it only behind Sathyam Cinemas and Devi Paradise.
The seats are relatively comfortable. Yet,when you recline the seat,it consumes much of the leg space. Sathyam's seats are reminiscent of that of the Maharaja's of those days and you can run a bicycle through the leg space comfortably.
There were a few idiots inside the movie hall making constant noise. I complained to the theater staff who were quick enough to mute the fools. Thanks to them.
The restrooms looked neat and decent with a new flush free technology.
The biggest bonanza however goes to people who buy 10 Rs. tickets. The distance between the screen and the first row is half of the size of an Inox movie hall. What more, the seats are no different from the ones for Rs.120/-.For the first time ever,I saw some girls in the first row.
I would give four out of five for PVR.
There is a solitary Sun,a solitary Moon and there can only be one Sathyam.
