Few heard about Boman Irani till he was 37. At 50,the actor is one of the most sought-after in Bollywood today. He has managed to woo children,teens and adults alike. Veteran directors like Shyam Benegal swear by him saying he is a versatile actor. With ordinary looks and body the actor is ruling the roost in the glamorous industry. What makes him click? Sheer talent and the ability to adapt to any character. The man from Nagpada, a Mumbai suburb touched the hearts of the movie fans with excellent performances in Munnabhai MBBS, Khosla Ka Ghosla and now, 3 Idiots. He has the ability to connect to the audience. With a Parsi background,the actor succesfully donned a role of a Hyderabadi with a peculiar accent in Well Done Abba. He sat with a language coach to perfect the accent. The secret of his success lies in his habit of observing people closely. And he brings out whatever that was recorded in his mind in front of the camera.
Irani started off assisting his parents in their family owned bakery at Grant road. He dabbled at photography for sometime. Shiamak Dhavar takes the credit of urging Irani to take up films. He did a few notable roles in stage plays. And then he entered the film industry. He was reluctant to act in Hindi films as he is not fluent with the language. Producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra encouraged him to accept the assignment giving him confidence that he could manage the language. After doing a few films,he acted in the iconic Munnabhai MBBS. The rest is history. Irani rues that he has no privacy anymore. He couldn't afford a drive to his favorite restaurant with friends as he is mobbed by fans. From owning a Maruthi 800 to a Mercedes now,he truly has come a long way.
