Off late,Sufi music has made its way from concert halls into Hindi film music.Sufi is a unique music tradition which celebrates the virtues of God. It is part of a way of life called Sufism. Sufi music was made popular by artists like Abida Parveen and Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan from Pakistan. I still rue over missing an opportunity to watch Abida Parveen when she visited Chennai. Good lyrics combined with a lilting melody is the feature of Sufi music. The form and structure of Sufi music is very complex and is interpreted differently by each of its exponents.Sufi music is now popular in Hindi cinema with composers such as A R Rahman giving hits like 'Tere Bin' from Guru. Sufi is not just about God,it can also be love. That explains the popularity of the genre in film music. My favorite is "Mehboob Mere",from Fiza. The prominent instruments in Sufi music are the 'Nay' and the 'Bendir'. There are some purists who condemn the commercialization of the genre.
Some recommendations :
1. "Maula Mere" from Amar
2. "Tere Bin" from Guru.
3. "O Sikander" from Corporate
4. "Rabbi' from" Zindagi Rocks
5. "Mann Ki Lagan" by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan
