Since I started following western music,I use to check the inlay card that comes with the music cassette or CD. The inlay card would invariably have this term : "produced by...". I wouldn't have a clue. Coz,back home, we have 'music directors' and 'composers',but no 'producers'. The word producer refers to someone who finances a film and it has nothing to do with music production in our music.I would wonder why there was no information about the composer or music director in a music album. My search began to find out who was a 'producer'.That wasn't an easy task.I talked to someone who had written a few books on western music.Even that gentleman didn't know the meaning of the term.Few days later, due to my own understanding and a bit of reading helped me understand who was a 'producer'. For starters,a producer in the western parlance can be a composer or music director plus,he would also monitor the financial aspects of the album-like booking studios, supervising the recording sessions etc.,And why a producer is credited in an album and not the composer? Because, the western music world sees a producer as a director of a film. The director may or may own the plot of the film, but it is the director who takes the credit of a film. Similarly,a producer may or may not compose a tune, however,it is himself who decides the final outcome of the song. Thus, western music albums carry the name of the producer of the album and not the composer.
