Right To Information Act

As ordinary citizens, we often see the affluent and the politically connected getting things done much faster than we could. Be it getting a passport, driving licence or even groceries at ration shops,a few privileged people are favored leaving us waiting for months. We are kept in the dark about the procedure in processing the applications. And there was no legal way to know the things behind the screen. Social activists put in a lot of effort to put an end to this practice. After debates and discussions, the Indian Government finally came up with the Right to Information Act, or simply the RTI. With RTI, you can get information of how your application is processed and find out the list of all applications made. Say for example, you applied for a driving license and you are waiting for longer than you thought. And you think that there is some favor made to a few. You can pay Rs.150 and make an application to the officer concerned and find out how the whole process was made. You will be very sure that no favor has been extended. The RTI lessens the incidence of bribery and favoritism. It is a landmark act.
